Copacabana is a densely populated area located at the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The 4km half-moon beach is a famous postcard of the city.
On Sundays, the Atlantic Avenue – the seashore avenue of Copacabana – closes one way for people to enjoy outdoors hobbies and living. People practicing sports, sunbathing or just getting together and having fun: this is the spirit of Copacabana.
Copacabana New Year’s Eve celebration is known worldwide for its fireworks. Copacabana beach was also the site of huge free concerts performed by The Rolling Stones, Lenny Kravitz, Rod Stewart, Black Eyed Peas and much more.
The zone includes the Flamengo Park Cluster. On Copacabana Zone, it will be performed Rowing, Sailing, Athletics (Race Walk/Marathon) and Cycling (Road) both Olympic and Paralympic competitions, as well as Canoe/Kayak (Flatwater), Volleyball (Beach), Aquatics (Marathon Swimming) and Triathlon Olympic competitions and Para-Canoeying and Para-Triathlon Paralympic competitions.
Legacy
The remediation and protection of the unique environmental assets of this region, including the bays and other waterways, is a priority to the city. The Rio 2016 Master Plan will support the strategic initiatives involved in this remediation.
