Beach Volleyball

Beach Volleyball takes place outside, where the athletes have to compete with the added variables of the sand, the sun and the wind.

In 2016, Beach Volleyball will take place at Copacabana Stadium, a 100% temporary venue built for the Rio 2016 Games™. Competitions will occur from 7 to 19 August. There will be men’s and women’s events, and the three best doubles will be awarded with gold, silver and bronze medals.

Beach Volleyball methods of scoring are the same as Volleyball, but there are some differences regarding rules. It is played in three sets: the first two sets go until 21 points and, if necessary, the third goes until 15 points.

Rewinding

The Beach Volley appeared in the 1920s as a family hobby at California beaches, in the United States. However, it was only consolidated as a sport in the following decade. It was incorporated in the Olympic Programme for the first time in Atlanta 1996, when it was played in male and female doubles. Since then, Brazil and United States have won all the gold medals, except for Sydney 2000, when the Australian female team was the champion.
