Marathon Swimming

Marathon swimming had its Olympic debut in Beijing 2008 as one of the Aquatics events – however it has been awarded discipline status by FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation in French) beginning at the Rio 2016 Games. Swimmers compete in open water - either at sea or in a river – where they must swim a distance of 10 km, in a pre-determined circuit. The winner is always the swimmer that crosses the finishing line first.
