In August, 11th, the Banco Central do Brasil (Brazil’s Central Bank) issued two commemorative coins to celebrate the Olympic flag handover to Brazil, in a ceremony promoted by the Rio 2016™ Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, at Somerset House, London, where Casa Brasil (Brazil House) is located. The event was a result of an agreement signed by Banco Central, Casa da Moeda do Brasil (the Brazilian mint) and Rio 2016™.

A special edition of 2,016,000 bimetalic circulating coins were minted. Their reverse keeps the design of the ordinary 1-real circulating coins: elements of the Brazilian flag. The obverse shows the Olympic flag and the Rio 2016™ Olympic Games emblem. Up to 80,000 units out of this mintage will be sold in special packages for collectors.

This Sunday, the Rio 2016™ Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee celebrated the four year mark before the start of the Rio 2016™ Olympic Games with an event at Casa Brasil, hosted at Somerset House. Those present included Carlos Arthur Nuzman, President of Rio 2016™; Leonardo Gryner, CEO of the Organising Committee; and Stephen Urquhart, President of OMEGA, a Worldwide Olympic Partner and supplier of the countdown clock for the Rio 2016™ Olympic Games that is displayed at Casa Brasil.

Four years ahead of the Opening Ceremony, all of the major construction work needed for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games is under way, including Line 4 of the Metro system and the renovation of the port district. Within the last year, work has begun on the Olympic Park, located in the Barra zone, which will occupy a site covering 1.18 million square metres and will host a total of nine sports. The foundations of the Olympic Village buildings have also already been laid, after the ground has been prepared, and the design for the golf course has been selected.

Rio 2016™ launches a font inspired by the logo and begins to build the visual identity of the Games

It took eight months to create the 5448 characters that carry the brand essence of the Rio 2016™ Games

The Rio 2016™ Organising Committee for the Olympic ad Paralympic Games launched this Monday, in London, the bespoke font, which will be used for key messages of the Games. Its creation was inspired by the letters and figures of the Rio 2016™ logo and the essence of the Games: passion and transformation, which unites the Olympic and Paralympic brands.

A total of 23 studies were created, over 8 months’ work, until all 5448 characters were perfected. The brand concepts of Rio 2016™ needed to be present in the design of every accent and the shape of every ligature.

The Branding Director of the Rio 2016™ Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee, Beth Lula, underscores that the creation of the Rio 2016 font is an important legacy of the Games: “The creation of a proprietary font will perpetuate the brands and the essence of the Games, in addition to being a very valuable addition to Brazilian design”, she says.
